OPC Music Department

General Statement

The goal of our music program is to explore the many ways music can enrich our lives in Christ.

With that in mind, we seek to perform a wide variety of musical styles in our worship services that accentuate the scripture, the sermon and promote both personal and communal Christian ideals. We are open to new membership and are eager to receive your talent and ideas!

Organizations

Chancel Choir

The Chancel Choir performs during our traditional worship service. They routinely sing an opening introit, an anthem, and accompany the congregation when singing hymns. Their musical diet consists of traditional Christian tunes, music of the classical masters, gospel, spirituals, and the occasional experimental number. They also participate in more musically intensive special services. Rehearsals are on Thursday evenings from 7:15 pm - 8:45 pm and Sunday mornings. Join us!

Praise Band

The Praise Band performs during the contemporary/ blended worship services. They currently consist of five vocalists, piano, drums, lead guitar, rhythm guitar, and bass. They routinely perform three to four contemporary worship tunes during the morning praise and worship, a song of preparation leading to the pastor's sermon, and a closing song. Their lyrics are provided by overhead projection and/or in our worship bulletin and the congregation joyfully sings with them on every song!

Praise Team Choir

The Praise Team is the contemporary counterpart to the Chancel Choir. They perform during our contemporary/blended worship services. They supply backup vocals to the Praise Band and present the worship service anthem. They explore a wide variety of music ranging in style from pop/rock, gospel, spirituals, country, middle eastern pop, reggae, etc. They routinely perform with only piano accompaniment, but occasionally the Praise Band is their backup! The Praise Team Choir rehearses onThursday evenings from 6:00 pm 'til 7:15 p.m. and Sunday mornings.

Handbell Ensemble

The Handbell Ensemble performs in our traditional worship service on a regular basis. They enjoy performing during the offertory, accompanying the Chancel Choir, providing musical accents when desired, and performing regularly for the public during the fall, Christmas, Easter, and spring seasons. They also enjoy attending handbell workshops, which is a great way to meet other ringers! Rehearsals are Wednesday evenings from 6:15 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

HIS KIDS Joyful Noise Choir

The HIS KIDS Joyful Noise Choir bring us special performances throughout the year. They enjoy performing all styles of music. The rehearsals, under the direction of Kelly Lamar, are held during the HIS KIDS program on Tuesdays at 3:30 p.m. in the Sonshine Room. (Our HIS KIDS program runs in sessions throughout the year.)

Ojai Presbyterian Church Instrumentalists

Members of the congregation (and the occasional guest) enjoy performing instrumental solos, duets, and small groups during our regular worship and special services. We also provide instrumental accompaniment to the choirs. If you are interested in contributing your instrumental skills to our music program, please contact our music director, Dr. Trey Demmond.
